The Greatest Girl Groups of the 1960's

The Shangri Las "Give Him a Great Big Kiss"

The Idea

In recent times, I have with great pleasure listened to various girl groups from the 1960s, and this gave me the idea to make my personal ranking list of them and selected 10-15 of the best recordings of each group's songs. A very subjective task, of course, and I am very happy to receive feedback or comments. Guestbook!! The earliest groups from 1960-1963 have strong roots in the American doo-wop and pop tradition, and several failed to integrate the "modern" sound that came from Europe with The Beatles and the whole ”British Invasion”. Other girl groups were quite succesful in doing this their music benefited greatly from this. This also meant as a kind of tribute to some og the great songwriters of this era and who wrote several songs listed in this project. Here, the most diligent in the context. The number in the parentheses indicates the number of songs each songwriter contributed to: Jeff Barry (24), Ellie Greenwich (24), Phil Spector (19), Jerry Goffin (18), Carole King (17), Brian Holland (16), Lamont Dozier (15), Edward Holland (14), George Morton (7), Barry Mann (5), Cynthia Weil (5), Brian Wilson (4)

Number 1 - The Shangri Las

As a perhaps surprising number 1, I have The Shangi-Las. There are many reasons for this. First of all, virtually all of their recordings are great and very listenable, and the song choices are superb. Their manager and producer George "Shadow" Morton created a sound that was inspired by The Wall of Sound and Phil Spector, but which also had an airiness and sensitivity that you may miss on several of Spector's recordings. Lead singer Mary Weiss had by far the sexiest voice of them all, and the choir consisting of sisters Ganser and big sister Betty Weiss provided beautiful soft harmonies that lead thoughts more towards Brian Wilson and The Beach Boys. In 1967, their record label, Red Bird, closed, unfortunately, and it only turned into two album releases. The group continued for a short time at Mercury Records, but when the success failed, the girls each went on their own in 1968. The three singles released on Mercury simply did not have the same level of quality as the previous ones.

Number 2 - The Supremes

As number 2 comes The Supremes. One could easily argue that The Supremes by far was the most succesful group, who had by far the most hit-songs. Well I still choose to put them behind The Shangi-Las, due to their production, which is very extensive but also pretty inconsistent. Their best tracks are, without discussion, timeless classics and their recordings have largely helped define the Motown genre; not least thanks to the fantastic Holland-Dozier-Holland songwriting and production team.

Number 3 - The Ronettes

As number 3 comes Phil Spector's personal favorite girl group, The Ronettes. Spector found many really strong songs for the group, and on the personal level he ended up marrying lead singer Ronnie Bennett. Bennett has a distinctive voice, but may lack the sensitivity of both Mary Weiss and Diana Ross. With "Be My Baby" the group is perhaps the epitome of The Wall of Sound but despite other great hits, the group only managed to record one album with Phil Spector before they disbanded in 1968. Before the group came under Spector's wings, they had recorded some less significant singles in the period 1961-1962.

My Selected 15 favourite tracks

1. Be My Baby ( Spector/Greenwich/Barry ) Presenting the Fabulous Ronettes

Number 4 - The Shirelles

Now it's getting tough, but the number 4 pick falls on The Shirelles. That the group deserves a high ranking, The Beatles, who recorded a couple of their songs ("Baby Its You" "and" Boys ") would probably welcome. The group's sound is predominantly pre-Spector and The Beatles, but the group's long list of hit singles is only overmatched by the Supremes. The group was produced by Luther Dixon and Bob Irwin. The best period of the group is from 1960-1964. A few of the later albums from 1967 also contain single gems. The group continued into the 1970s, but that is beyond this concept.

My Selected 15 favourite tracks

Number 5 - The Crystals

As number 5. Comes another of Phil Spector's groups, The Crystals. I don't think there can be any doubt that this group of big voices like Lala Brooks and Darlene Love could have achieved more than they did as a group. Spector was more likely to give the best songs to The Ronettes. It did, however, come to big classics like "He's to Rebel", "Then I Kissed Him" and "Da Do Ron Ron Ron". Two albums were released in 1962 and 1963 containing more or less the same tracks; while you must go for some of the several compilations to find the other great tracks. The girls did not back down on releasing songs, with controversal lyrics, like "He Hit Me" and "He's a Rebel" - a song that The Shirelles did not dare record

My Selected favourite tracks

1. Then I Kissed Him ( Spector/Greenwich/Barry) Single 1963
2. Da Do Ron Ron Ron ( Spector/Greenwich/Barry) Single 1963
3. He's a Rebel ( Pitney ) He's a Rebel
4. He's Sure the Boy I Love ( Mann/Weil ) He's a Rebel

7. Uptown ( Mann/Weil ) Uptown
8. All Grown Up ( Spector/Greenwich/Barry ) Single 1964
9. Little Boy ( Spector/Greenwich/Barry ) Single 1964
10. You Can't Tie a Good Girl Down ( Tannen/Trimachi ) Single 1965
11. My Place ( Decoteaux/Kusik ) B-side 1965

Number 6 - The Chiffons

As number 6, I have chosen another relative productive groups with 4 albums with several singles released during 1963-1970. The Chiffons are probably best known for their big hits "So So Fine" and "One Fine Day" with the distinctive piano theme; probably played by Carole King, who along with Gerry Goffin also wrote the song. Their albums may be a bit uneven, but there are gems on them all.

My Selected favourite tracks

1. One Fine Day ( Goffin/King) One Fine Day
2. He's So Fine ( Mack) He's So Fine
3. Tonight I'm Gonna Dream ( Friedland ) Single 1965

Number 7 - Reparata and The Delrons

For number 7, I chose Reparata and The Delrons, who recorded two albums and a string of fine singles. Several of the songs that they recorded were also covered by other "girlgroups" but their versions were usually just as good and in some cases even better

2. Whenever a Teenager Cries (Maresca ) Single 1964 / Whenever a Teenager Cries

Number 8 - The Honeys

As number 8, I chose The Honeys, which recorded only 5 singles in the 1960s. Most of these, on the other hand, are quite good ones written by Brian Wilson and produced by him. The first four in style are very similar to the Beach Boys themselves - not surprising. The group consisted of sisters Diane and Marilyn Rovell and their cousin Ginger Blake; Brian Wilson married Marilyn in 1964.

My Selected favourite tracks

1. He's a Doll ( Wilson ) Single 1964
2. Shoot the Curl (Rowell/Glantz ) Single 1963
3. Pray For Surf (Rowell/Glantz ) Single 1963

Number 9 - The Dixie Cups

For number 9 I have chosen The Dixie Cups, who shared label with The Shangri-Las on Red Bird. They recorded two albums in the 1960's, with several fine songs written by Greenwich/Barry. Only some traks like "Iko Iko" they used traditional African music for inspiration. They were produced by Leiber and Stoller

My Selected favourite tracks

1. People Say (Greenwich/Barry) Chapel of Love
2. You Should Have Seen the Way He Looked at Me (Barry Greenwich ) Single 1964

-

Number 10 - The Marvelettes

For number 10 I have decided on The Marvelettes. If not for anything else they deserve the spot for launching "Please Mr Postman", which the Beatles later gave an even better version of. They recorded on the Tamla label and the group is generally more Motown/R&B than what is usually considered girl-group music. Much like Martha and The Vandellas whom I choose to leave out. The Marvelettes had in the early years Gladys Catherine Horton in front with her charming raspy vocals

My Selected favourite tracks

1. Please Mr Postman ( Bert/Dobbins/Garrett) Please Mr Postman
2. Beechwood 4-5789 (Gaye/Stevenson/Gordy) Playboy
3. Too Hurt to Cry, Too Much in Love to Say Goodbye (Holland/Dozier/Holland) single 1963

-

Number 11 - The Cookies

Last place as number 11 goes to The Cookies; mostly because of Carole King's "Chains" which the Beatles also recorded. It only came to an EP and a good handful of singles in the period 1960-1967. Incidentally. The group recorded in the 1950s - out of this concept

My Selected favourite tracks

1. Chains ( King) Cookies EP
2. Will Power (King/Goffin) B-side 1963
3. I Want A Boy For My Birthday (Bradford) single 1963

Summing Up

These were my chosen eleven. There will be contenders, and other groups that may deserve a place on the list. Perhaps some I have never heard about.
There a few names I would like to mention. Had Lesley Gore been in a group with a couple of harmony singers, they would have been high on the list. Her music fits perfectly into the concept; and of course, she has a great voice. Also Mamas & the Papas would have fitted in; but they had male singers too! Marianne Faithfull's early records could also match the concept. She did the best version I have of "Is This What I Get For Loving You Baby".
