Comments:

“Across a Crowded Room” from 1985 is the third solo album by Richard Thompson. The album consists of ten original rock songs written by Thompson himself, and his musicians include old friends from the Fairport Convention in Simon Nicol's guitar and Dave Mattacks' drums.

Thompson's guitar playing is, as always, pleasing to the ear, both his effective rhythm playing and his virtuoso solos. The album starts off strongly with two really solid rockers in "When the Spell is Broken" and "You Don't Say". My favorite, however, is "Shine on Love", which is actually listed as an "extra track". This song is one of the most melodic and has a folkish feel to it. Some of the songs may not be particularly memorable in themselves, but there is a nice homogeneity in the album which is mainly due to Thompson's strong guitar playing.
