The Beau Brummels
Beau Brummels Singles A's and B's - Released on Turn Around boxset 2021 Comments:The Beau Brummels released a string of fine singles in the period 1964-1969; in most cases these singles also had fine B-sides. The music could be described folk-rock which over the years turned over towards country. At times they may remind you of the Byrds and the Searchers; at other times of “The Flying Burrito Brothers” or perhaps Poco.
The 12 singles with their respective B-sides are collected on the CD "The Singles A's and B's" which is CD 8 of the large Boxset "Turn Around" released in 2021. In addition to the singles, there are four rare Sal Valentino tracks at the end of the CD.
The first five singles were released on the small label Autumn and they are all very good; both A and B sides. All tracks feature guitarist Ron Elliott as songwriter; except for "Good Time Music", written by John Sebastian, whose group The Lovin' Spoonful was often categorized as just that. Strange that The Lovin' Spoonful never released this fine song themselves.
After the switch to Warner Brothers, the music became more varied; both in genre and quality. Among the later tracks, I would like to highlight the group's cover version of Bob Dylan's "One Too Many Mornings" as well as Ron Elliot's "Fine with Me", "Two Days till Tomorrow", "Lower Level" and "Long Way Down".
Overall, this is a very strong collection of songs, most of which will be found on the various compilations that have been released with the group over time. However, I don't think there is any release other than this particular one that has all the singles with their B-sides included.
