Amy Winehouse
Frank - Island Records 2003 Comments:It was the album “Back to Black” with songs like “Rehab” and “Back to Black” that got me interested in Amy Winehouse; by this time she was sadly already gone as a sad member of Club-27.
I had heard a bit of "Frank" on the radio and was quick to conclude that it was not music for me - too jazzy.
After "Back to Black", however, I wanted to give "Frank" a chance and can now conclude that it is a rather different album, but that after all there are tracks for my taste as well.
"F**k Me Pumps" is both melodic and catchy and probably my favourite. "Stronger Than Me" is a fine slow blues number that sets a fine standard as an opening number. Another fine bluesy number is "What is it About Men". "Help Yourself", which Amy wrote together with Jimmy Hogarth, is also to be highlighted. Here, in addition to a nice melody, there is fine acoustic guitar.
Part of the album is quite jazzy/funky and not really my style; so “Back to Black” is still by far my favorite Amy album.
