The Blue Aeroplanes
Friendloverplane - Fire 1988 - comp. Comments:It goes without saying that a compilation of rarities and outtakes with The Blue Aeroplanes recorded in the group's early years must be a disparate affair. Partly because these are precisely outtakes and B-sides, but also because the group were very experimental in the beginning and tried out many genres and instrumentations. There should be something for everyone here then; at least there is for me. The group's signature trademarks, the fine guitar sound, the spoken lead vocals and the fine vocal harmonies are present on many tracks and for the same reasons I am very pleased with this album.
The group released during 1985-1988 6 EPs, and most non-album tracks among these are included here. A large string of previously unreleased songs are included and several of these are quite good. There is also a great song, "Days of 49", originally released on a flexi disc. An acoustic number against the rule not with Gerald Langley in front.
Otherwise, I must emphasize the "Veil of Colour", which is the epitome of the group at its best. Among the EP songs "Complete Blessing" and "King of the Soapbox", reminding me of another favorite, Midnight Oil, are both great
Among the previously unreleased tracks I have to highlight "Tolerance" and "Warhol's Fifteen"
As always, you are in good and exciting company with The Blue Aeroplanes
