Comments:

It's been almost twenty years since Midnight Oil last released a studio album, “Capricornica” from 2001. After a long hiatus the band came back together in 2017 and in 2020 they got involved with “The Makarrata Project”, which is about support and mutual understanding for and with Australia's indigenous peoples. Throughout the years, this theme has been strongly in the minds of Midnight Oil in mind, which many of their lyrics over the years reflect.

The songwriting, energy and playing is at the very top of this great album, which vocally has several guest appearances from artists with roots in Australia's indigenous people. Midnight Oil here are Peter Garrett, Jim Moginie, Rob Hirst, Martin Rotsey and Bones Hillman. Hillman sadly died in December 2020 and his beautiful "Terror Australia", sung here by Alice Skye, is one of the album's many moving highlights. Watch the video on Youtube, which is beautifully dedicated to Hillman. In addition to his rocking and solid bass playing, his fine harmony vocals were one of the group's trademarks.

The opening track "First Nation" is a strong classic Midnight Oil song, with a powerful Peter Garrett in front. He is complemented along the way by Jessica Maubot and rapper Tasman Keith. On "Gadigal Land", in addition to several guest singers and solid musical support, there is a group of horns that help to give this classic Midnight Oil style number extra power. "Change the Date" is a very beautiful, almost hymn-like, song with fine melodic piano and several fine voices with Peter Garrett in front. Here is also both talk and song in the original language. The fourth track is the aforementioned "Terror Australia". The track does not sound like Midnight Oil but rather like Dido, with its sparse accompaniment and the beautiful female vocals. "Desert Man, Desert Woman" a folkish song with acoustic guitar that begins with a aboriginal voice . The song is sung by Frank Yamma, who co-wrote the song with Peter Garrett. With "Wind in My Head" we are back to well-known Midnight Oil sound, with strong Garrett vocals and crisp guitars. Another highlight with fine harmony vocals. The final number "Come on Down", written by Jim Moginie begins with a long "Uluru Statement" read out by various participants in the project. Another nice song in classic Oil style, which perhaps should have separated from the introductory statement, which you probably do not necessarily need to hear every time you listen to the song.
