The Move
Message From the Country - Harvest 1971 Comments:
The Move's fourth and last album was recorded while the members of the group were well on the move with their new project, the Electric Light Orchestra.
"Message From the Country" has some highlights and shows in glimpse some of the characteristic Move-sound; But overall, it's a bit of a mixed bag, and in my opinion, the least successful Move album.
Jeff Lynne does hit the Move sound on the title track "Message From the Country", which is perhaps the strongest track on the album.
Roy Wood's two best contributions "Ella James" and "It Was not My Idea to Dance" hit the somewhat heavy sound of the previous album "Looking On" (Brontosaurus et al.). Three tracks are in the Elvis / Johnny Cash pastiche department which some may find amusing, but also in the long run hard to take seriously. Jeff Lynne's "No Time" and "The Words of Aaron" do not really sound like Move songs, and his "The Minister" is just heavy and boring. All in all, a disappointing farewell from one of the most exciting groups of the late 1960s.
