Comments:

1991's "Out of Time" is one of REM's greatest album successes; and the album with which R.E.M.'s status grew from being a cult band to a major international name. The group combines elements of pop, folk and classical rock and makes use of a large number of different instruments and guest musicians; among these significant names such as Kate Pierson (B52's) and Peter Holsapple (the dB's).

Among the four singles from the album are two of the group's biggest hits, "Losing My Religion" (lovely crisp mandolin from Peter Buck) and "Shiny Happy People" (with Kate Pierson). Pierson is also featured on another single "Near Wild Heaven" which, like actually most songs on the album, is very melodic and singable; both this single and the opening track, the funky rocking "Radio Song" also became nice single successes in the UK. In addition to the four strong singles, I must also highlight the fine light waltzy "Half the World Away", which also has fine mandolin in the instrumentation.

No doubt, this is one of REMs most enduring albums
