Indigo Girls
Rarities - Comp. - Epic 2005 Comments:Being a big fan of the Indigo Girls, I hate to admit that I was a bit disappointed with this CD when I first listened to it - and I probably still is. Obviously a rarities collection will very rarely have the consistency of regular albums, so my disappointment with this one is maybe unfair.
One of the very first tracks I ever heard from the Indigos, was their terrific version of "Uncle John's Band" from the "Deadicated" tribute album. It is one of the stand out tracks on this collection; unfortunately only few of the other songs comes close to it, though "I Don't Wanna Talk About It" from the 1993 motion picture "Philadelphia" is great too.
Emily Saliers' early EP track ( 1986 ) "Never Stop" is interesting; seems that Amy Ray's voice has changed quite a lot over the years. The "Shaming of the Sun" out-take "Winthrop", also by Saliers ( on the piano ) , had deserved a place on the original album.
The demo-version of "Ghost" is quite nice The strongest Amy Ray contribution is her new song "Point Hope" - thought-provoking lyrics about nuclear weapon experiments.
A handful of tracks are live-recordings; among them "Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters" stand out.
Some of the other tracks are pretty forgettable; and a few come close to being directly weak. I particularly don't like "Free of Hope" and "I'll Give You My Skin" A must-have for any Indigo Girls fan, but don't expect too much!
