Richard Thompson
Sweet Warrior - Proper 2007 Comments:After the almost completely acoustic album “Front Parlor Ballads”, Richard Thompson returned in 2007 with the electric "Sweet Warrior".
As always, Thompson's guitar playing is a pleasure in itself; very varied with so many facets. His songwriting is also, at its best, unique and even though not all songs on "Sweet Warrior" can be given such a designation, there are plenty of good songs to make a strong album.
Most well-known is probably the single "Dad's Gonna Kill Me", which is a political commentary on the war in Iraq. it's also a nice catchy boogie rocker.
Otherwise, my selected favorites are: "Take Care the Road You Choose", which is a long ballad-like song that reminds me a bit of The Rolling Stones' "Wild Horses". "Poppy Red", which is probably the album's most catchy / commercial; also a nice rocker with great lyrics. "Too Late to Stop Now", which is one of the slow tracks, with a very nice melody. And finally the extended "Guns Are the Tongues", which is both dramatic and melodic; perhaps the album's real highlight; a comment to the conflict in Northern Ireland.
