Comments:
"The Next Day" from 2013 was to become David Bowie's penultimate album. It is actually a really fine rock album that partly draws strands back to his golden period in the 1970s with albums like "Hunky Dory", "Ziggy Stardust" and "Diamond Dogs" and partly gives way to his more experimental and innovative side. Personally, I like Bowie best when he is both melodic and rocking at one time. Fortunately, there are quite a few songs in this category, and although he doesn't quite reach the heights of the golden days of the 1970s (and his vocals may not be quite as powerful as before), you can only enjoy fine pop rockers like "Valentine's Day", "I 'd Rather Be High', 'Boss of Me' and the somewhat noisy 'How Does the Grass Grow'.
Also the great ballad "You Feel So Lonely You Could Die" is a highlight - classic Bowie.
There are also a handful of songs on this relatively long album, which doesn't really catch me, but as a whole the album comes out very solid.
First single "Where Are We Now?" is actually one of the numbers I’m less excited about, but it was nevertheless the most successful with top 10 rankings in many countries.
The other three singles "The Stars", "The Next Day" and, to me surprisingly also "Valentine's Day", only got rather disappointing rankings in the charts.
