Pink Floyd
The Wall - Harvest 1979 Comments:It was about two or three years since I last listened to “The Wall” in its entirety and I had actually forgotten how big an album it is. In addition to its complex themes and storyline with tracks that are very much linked to its context, there are also surprisingly many songs that musically and compositionally easily can stand alone outside the framework "The Wall".
"Another Brick in the Wall - Part 2" is an obvious example, as the song topped the charts worldwide. The same can be said about the other two singles "Run Like Hell" and "Comfortably Numb" - the latter is one of the group's finest compositions with the unforgettable guitar solo from Dave Gilmour.
Chosen a bit in passing, I would further highlight the touching "Mother", a song a bit in the same vein as "Wish You Were Here" and "Brain Damage" with a catchy acoustic guitar up-front. "Young Lust" is a bluesy rocker with a captivating chorus - could probably also have easily made it onto the singles charts. The same could be said about "Hey You", which is lighter and more melodic rocksong.
"Nobody Home" is a moving piano based song - you can’t help feeling the loss and suppressed desperation. Finally, I would also like to highlight the very Beatles-like "The Show Must Go On".
I could have mentioned more strong cuts and the album in its entirety is more or less unsurpassed.
