The Blue Aeroplanes
Tolerance - Fire 1986 Comments:This second album from The Blue Airplanes released in 1986 is in several ways rather different from the group's most popular albums such as "Swagger" and "Beatsongs" from 1990 and 1991.
"Tolerance" is less polished, less catchy, more free-flowing and the songs generally more quirky. Thus, it must to a large extent be considered a fan album, which initially must have appealed mostly to the group's live audience and later to completists and collectors of the group's audio-releases. I myself belong to the latter category, having fallen for the group via "Swagger" and their version of The Kinks' "Big Sky" - it was probably mostly the earpleasing guitars that caught me, but also Gerard Langley's special spoken vocals.
There are lots of spoken vocals and to some extent also nice guitar on "Tolerance". I'm overall not that impressed with the songs themselves, where only the upbeat "Arriving" and the relatively catchy title song "Tolerance" really make an impression. There are a couple of very slow tracks and several where the sound is pretty raw. I assume if you give yourself time to get to know these tracks better, they will no doubt win.
