The Shirelles
The Shirelles Sing to Trumpets and Strings - Scepter 1961 Comments:"The Shirelles Sing To Trumpets and Strings" from 1961 was the group's second album. At the time of release, the group had already had two major hits with "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" and "Dedicated to the One I Love", while "Tonight's the Night" title track from the debut album had been a minor hit.
So there were expectations and something to live up to for the girls and producer Luther Dixon.
The album opens really strongly with the new single "Mama Said", written by Luther Dixon and Willie Denson. Jerry Goffin and Carole King wrote the second single from the album "What a Sweet Thing That Was" and although it is a really nice song it did not, like "Mama Said", reach a "top ten position"
The group has with Shirley Owens in front a distinct and soulful lead-singer, but part of the material on this album does not really live up to expectations one might have, and besides the two singles there is hardly much more than "The First One" that really sticks with - nice and solid songs, perhaps, but also rather forgettable
