John Mayall
USA Union - Polydor 1970 Comments:Variations on a twelve-bar blues.
John Mayall is a true blues man and throughout his long career he has written countless variations on the classic 12-bar blues template. This also applies to this early album from 1970, where he is backed up, as always, by really talented musicians; here the three Americans Don Harris, Harvey Mandell and Larry Taylor.
It is an overall pleasant album, where the tracks are nicely varied in beat and tempo. However, the tight 12 bar template can be a bit monotonous, and luckily this is broken in a few individual songs such as "Nightflyer", which is probably my favorite on the album.
