Richard Thompson
You? Me? Us? - Capitol 1996 Comments:This double album from Richard Thompson features two quite different parts. CD (LP) 1 called "Voltage Enchanced" is an electric part where Thompson shows the rocking side of his music, while CD 2 "Nude" is an acoustic / unplugged part where Thompson's roots in folk music are revealed.
Both halves are fine in their own way and Thompson is a virtuoso on both electric and acoustic guitar. On the guest musician side you will find prominent names such as Simon Nicol (Fairport Convention), Danny Thompson (Pentangle), Jim Keltner (drummer in many contexts), Pete Thomas (The Attractions) and of course, producer Mitchell Froom.
The songwriting is solid, but I also feel that there are not many really great songs.
On "Voltage Enchanced" I want to highlight "Razor Blade", which is a nice rocker with a good chorus. "Hide it Away" is a quiet track with electric piano played by producer Mitchell Froom. "Put it There Pal" is a folkish and dramatic song with fine acoustic guitar-playing. "The Ghost of you Walks" is a sensitive song also with acoustic guitar.
On "Nude", where the songs are sparsely instrumented with mostly only guitar and bass, favorites are "Baby Don't Know What to do" and the long and melancholy "Woods of Darney", where
the instrumentation is augmented with cello and violins.
