Disappointing!

It may be a little misleading to give my review the headline "Disappointing", because I knew very well that Bowie had (again) changed style - this time towards American soul R & B / disco – musical styles that have never really appealed to me. So how can I be disappointed? Well, a slightly longer explanation follows:

Since the predecessor to "Young Americans" was one of my favorite Bowie albums, "Diamond Dogs", I obviously had to give "YA" more chances – originally this did not really help. Now, many years later, I wanted to hear the album again; it might be that I was not originally ready for this style change and maybe I did not understand the music at all. Halfway through the title track "Young Americans" I almost confirmed this hypothesis - it was a really good track - melodic, rhythmic and great lyrics. LOVELY. Next track "Win" – well . . . great sound, slow, slightly jazzy, evocative - but good – ah . . "Fascination" monotonous and funky – was original judgement right, after all? "Right" more monotonous disco-soul. "Somebody Up There" - a little better without being really good. "Across the Universe" - finally a good song. . But no, a totally uninspiring version withg Lennon's fine melody mistreated beyond recognition.

"Fame" ??. What has Lennon got to do with this wailing number. He is credited as a co-songwriter and also appears among the musicians as a guitarist and singer. I cannot spot him anywhere, and have again, by the way, lost interest in "Young Americans", which has, apart from the fine title track, once again disappointed me.
