His question was soon answered in a most unusual way. Blaze began to sniffle. "Ahh...CHOO!" And giant blast of lightning shot out of her and turned an entire row of flowerpots into dust. All of the Jellicles simply stared. "Uh...sorry," Blaze said. Mistoffelees was in shock. "You're magical!" he exclaimed. "Another magical cat?!?" "Is...that a problem?" Blaze said quietly. "Oh, no!" Mistoffelees said. "I just thought I was the only one!" "Well, my daddy was magical," Blaze explained. "I got my powers from him. But he..." She stopped short. Mistoffelees could guess why. "I'm sorry," he said. "Aww, it's okay. That happened a long time ago," Blaze said. "If it makes you feel any better, I know how you feel," Mistoffelees said. "I'm...kinda on my own, too." Blaze smiled. "I like you," she said. "You're a really nice guy."
The trio finally came to a stop in front of a large old tire sitting flat at the end of the Junkyard. Sitting on it was an old large brown and gray tabby. Blaze recognized him as Old Duteronomy, the Jellicle Leader of unnumbered years. He was a kind-looking old soul, his face weathered yet strong. Munkustrap knodded at him, and he knodded in return. Mistoffelees and Blaze did the same. "Old Duteronomy," Munkustrap said, "this is Blaze. She would like to join the tribe." Old Duteronomy slid off of the tire and walked up to the small queen. He looked at her a moment and smiled. "Tell me," he said in a soft, fatherly tone, "why you would like to become a Jellicle." Blaze thought for a moment. "Well," she began, "I have lived in seclusion for most of my life. Every now and then I would see a few cats pass my home on Kensington Square." She paused. "You know, the old Wesworth Place." Old Duteronomy knodded. 'So that's why everyone thought that place was haunted,' Mistoffelees thought. 'A magical cat living by herself, trying to keep her home safe.'
"Well, as I was saying," Blaze continued, "I would see cats pass by that would always be talking about The Jellicle Ball, or Old Duteronomy, or Jellicle something. Well, over time, I became interested in the Jellicles and decided to visit one of the Jellicle Balls. Which just happened to be the one held last night." Old Duteronomy knodded. "And everyone here just seemed so nice and pleasant. That is...except for Macavity. I've run into him a few times in the past." Blaze shuddered at the thought. "And I've grown so lonely. So...I thought that...maybe I could be accepted here."
Having said her reasons, Blaze backed down. Old Duteronomy rubbed his chin for a moment. "Munkustrap," he said. "May I speak with you for a moment?" "Yes, sir," Munkustrap said. They moved away from Mistoffelees and Blaze and began to discuss.
"What's going on?," Blaze asked nervously. "I think they're talking about whether to let you in or not," Mistoffelees said. "Oh, I just know that they won't," Blaze said mournfully. "You don't know that!" Mistoffelees said. "I think they will. You seem to be a really nice girl. We could use more queens like you around here." Blaze blushed. "Thanks," she said. "You know, next to my father, you're the sweetest guy I've ever met." Mistoffelees found himself blushing at that compliment, and not to mention the gaze of the young queen's lovely dark brown eyes.
"She seems sincere enough," Old Duteronomy said. "I don't think anyone like that could be in league with Macavity and we not know it. After all, she is magical. If a magical cat worked for Macavity, I think he would have control over us by now." Munkustrap knodded gravely. "Yes, however we cannot be one hundred percent sure right away," he said. "You never know what is truth and what is not." Old Duteronomy thought for a moment. "Perhaps if she had an escort for the first few weeks. That way we could know for sure." Munkustrap knodded. "Yes, excellent idea, sir. But who?" Old Duteronomy looked back at Blaze. She was chatting with Mistoffelees. "Mistoffelees seems to be a good choice," he said after a moment's consideration. "They seem to be getting along rather well." "Yes," Munkustrap said. "He can take good care of himself."
Old Duteronomy and Munkustrap returned. "We have decided," Old Duteronomy said, "to let you join the tribe." Blaze felt her heart jump into her throat. "Really??" she said. "Oh!" Old Duteronomy smiled. "However, we think that maybe you should have an escort for the first few weeks....to help you get to know everyone and know your way around." "Do you object?" Munkustrap said. "Oh no, that will be fine," Blaze said. "Good," Old Duteronomy said. "Mistoffelees, would you mind being her escort?" "No, I wouldn't mind at all!" Mistoffelees crowed. "I'd be more than happy to!" "Good," Old Duteroomy said. "Why don't you introduce our young friend to the others." "Okay," Mistoffelees said. "Wait till you meet Tugger!" He grabbed Blaze by the paw and led her off to a group of gathered Jellicles. "I hope you're right about her," Munkustrap said to Old Duteronomy.
