Skimbleshanks is known as "The Railway Cat" because of his occupation. He works aboard a train known as "The Midnight Mail" as a sort of supervisor. He walks around, making sure all is well and that the crew of the train are doing ther jobs properly. It is after Skimbleshanks' song that Old Duteronomy is kidnapped.
"All the guards and all the porters and the sation master's daughers would be searching high and low, saying 'Skimble! Where is Skimble? For unless he's very nimble then the Night Mail just can't go!'"
