STEVEN KING WRITES HORRIFIC FATE FOR AMERKS IN GAME 1
Sabre Sword's Recap of Game 1 of AHL Finals
Saturday, June 5, 1999
Rochester and Providence were two of the top teams in the AHL this year. Now the two teams meet in the Calder Cup Finals with both teams in quest to capture the AHL's most exclusive piece of hardware.
The Amerks first goal came from Davidson who shot the puck into the Bruins zone and skated to the net. He then got a pass in the slot and buried the puck past the fallen goaltender. With the Amerks down 2-1 early in the second period, the Amerks went on the power play where Holland had the puck at the point, gave a perfect past to Dean Sylvester who rifled the puck past Grahame, the Providence goaltender.
With the game tied at 2-2 in the third period, Steven King, not the author but the hockey player (who also played for the same AHL team as Jim Carey, not the actor) scored his second goal of the night to take the 3-2 lead and write the fate of the Amerks in game one. After King's goal, the ice seemed to tilt in favor of the Bruins who hit everything in sight. After the Amerks out-played the Bruins in the first two periods, things started to fall apart in the third period. With a few minutes left in the third period, Sabres call-up Dimitri Kalinin turned the puck over and had to take a penalty. By the time the penalty was over, there was only :36 left on the clock. Providence added an empty-netter and that was all she wrote.
If Rochester can get a split in Providence for the first two games by winning game two, it'll be a huge advantage as the Amerks are undefeated at the Blue Cross Arena this season.
