SUDDEN DEATH FOR THE AMERKS
Steven King once again writes our fate in Game 3
Wednesday, June 9, 1999

The Amerks came into Providence, Rhode Island with hope and left in despair. The Bruins won the first two games of the Calder Cup Finals in decisive fashion, especially in game two where Biron was rocked early and had to be pulled after allowing three goals on four shots.

But the Amerks were undefeated at home and had came back before against Philly last series so there was still life left in the Amerks as the series shifted to the Blue Cross Center.

The Bruins would strike early on a goal by Mathel who roofed the puck past Biron to give Providence a 1-0 lead. Minutes later the Amerks responded and tied the game at 1-1. The goal came when Providence played sloppy in their own end and turned the puck over and Pittis made them pay. Pittis got the loose rebound and fired the puck where the Calder Cup is hidden past Grahame to tie the game half-way through the first period. The Bruins would then take the 2-1 lead on the power play which came as a fluke goal. A shot was taken by Biron and he and the Amerks defense could not find the puck in front of the Amerks net and Ferraro tipped the puck over the glove of the bewildered Biron who could not control the rebound.

With Providence up 2-1, Cory Sarich scored off a great pass from Dean Sylvester to tie the game at 3-3. After that goal the pace picked up and the play became more physical. The Amerks were hitting everything in sight and it was great end-to-end action.

The game went into overtime and it was sudden-death for Rochester. In overtime with about 12:00 left, Providence went on a break-away and Biron made a huge save to save the Amerks' chances. The action really picked up after that.

The game would go into triple overtime where Steven King once again would write the Amerks fate with the game-winner in triple overtime to give the Bruins a commanding 3-0 series lead over the Amerks.
