CAMPBELL SIGNED TO CONTRACT IN LAST MINUTE

In the dying minutes last night before Campbell would become a free agent and re-enter in the draft if not signed, Darcy Regier finally came to terms with the OHL MVP 15 minutes before the deadline to sign the '97 draft choices.

Campbell most likely will play for Rochester in the Calder Cup Finals against Providence.

During the season, Sabres defenceman Jean-Luc Grand-Pierre was moved from defence to playing the wing and I think it would be in our best interest to do the same with Campbell, especially with the amount of depth the Sabres have on defence in the system.

Campbell has all the offencive tools that a player could need: bursting speed, the ability to make rushes up ice past defenders, a farily decent shot from the point and works well on the power play. His lack of size and lack of physical play are two majour drawbacks to Campbell's defencive game and this will be evident as he goes up against fiercer competition in the NHL. On a team who lacks defencive talent, Campbell would be a nice fit on defence but on a team like the Sabres who have alot of depth on defence I think Campbell has the assets to become a high-flying winger for the Sabres as shown with his ability to lead the rush up ice and blowing past defenders. On the power-play Campbell can still play the point but after seeing Campbell's offencive talents displayed in the OHL this season I'd move him up front to play on the wing, similar to how Grand-Pierre played on the wing for part of his time in Buffalo.

With the way Campbell blossomed into the player which he is now over the last few seasons, it was worth taking a chance in signing Brian to a contract and I think it is also worth the chance to play Campbell on the wing with the kind of speed and offencive skill he possesses, especially for a team who has a great amount of depth on defence as Buffalo and Rochester has.
