The Finesse Game
Ray is a good skater for a big guy, very mobile and surprisingly quick. He is a solid forechecker and is learning to keep his gloves and stick down. There is nothing wrong with taking aggressive penalties, but Ray is big enough to check cleanly and effectively. Ray has to work hard for his points. He has a nice wrist shot from in close and a hard slap shot. He doesn't do much creatively but patrols up and down his wing. He has good balance and can plant himself in front of the net, but he doesn't have really quick hands for picking up loose pucks, and he remains a fourth-line winger.

The Physical Game
Ray is one of those hitters who can galvanize a bench and a building. A defender with the puck knows Ray is coming and either has to be willing to stand up to the check or bail out--either way, Ray has a good shot at loosening a puck and getting a turnover. The problem is that he can't do much with the puck once he gets it and needs a clever linemate to trail in and pick up the pieces. A good fighter who doesn't get challenged much anymore, Ray was the player chiefly responsible for a rule change three seasons ago that penalized a player for shucking his jersey before an altercation, and was probably one of the inspirations for the tiedown rule. Of course, Ray circumvented that rule with using an extra-long tiedown. He is very good at making it look like the opponent has pulled off his jersey, which he wears large and loose and with the protective equipment sewn onto it. He's hockey's version of Demi Moore, since he goes topless at every opportunity.

The Intangibles
There is still a place in the NHL for a Rob Ray, especially on a team that is so small up front.

Projection
Ray was one goal shy of tying his career high last season, a result of sheer will and effort.
