The Finesse Game
Sanderson doesn't make the best use of his speed, which prevents him from becoming the southpaw version of Mike Gartner in that player's prime. His skating speed gives him a tremendous edge over the majority of NHL players, but it's not as big a weapon as it should be. Sanderson has to go, go, go, and take lots of shots. When he plays that way he is far more dangerous. He can drive wide on a defenseman or open up space by forcing the defense to play back off him. He doesn't score often off the rush because he doesn't have a heavy shot. He can create chaos off the rush, though, and finish up by getting open in the slot for a pass. He has a superb one-timer on the power play, where he likes to score on his off-wing in the deep right slot. Sanderson has become a better all-around player. He is more intelligent in his own end and his checking is more consistent. He can also kill penalties. His speed makes him a shorthanded threat.

The Physical Game
Sanderson has to learn and desire to fight his way through checkers. He is wiry but gets outmuscled, and although his speed keeps him clear of a lot of traffic, he has to battle when the room isn't there. He would benefit if the team added a little muscle up front.

The Intangibles
Sanderson looked lost after being traded twice and was a spare part in Buffalo in the playoffs. He has to decide how badly he wants a full-time job.

Projection
Sanderson dropped below the radar last season. The question is whether he wants to work harder to become an elite player or if he is content being a very good one. Last year he wasn't even that and his future is cloudy.
