Eating disorders appear mainly in young people between 12-25, although there are exceptions. About 10% of all reported eating-disordered people is a male, and numbers are increasing along with the awareness of this condition in males. Sufferers are mainly talented, smart, friendly people, who feel they have to live up to the expectations of people around them, as well as their own desire to excel.

An eating disorder is often triggered by the loss of a close person, problems in the family (such as divorces), abuse (physical, sexual or mental) or a crises (in personal or professional life). Many times the loss of control, or feeling as though there is such, can cause a person to hold on to the one thing he/she can control: their food intake.
