Bills batter Rams 31-14
Buffalo 4-0 after strong second half
If there ever was a "trap game," the Bills fell into a big Rams
trap when they entered the field in St. Louis. The Bills were entering the game
3-0 and the Rams were the complete opposite at 0-3.
The Rams came out and stopped the Bills offense and Trent Edwards, throwing
intense pressure onto the second year signal caller. Meanwhile, the Rams were
able to take 14-6 lead at halftime and it looked as if Buffalo was going to
suffer its first loss.
Something came together in the locker room at half time as the Bills came out a
much different team. In the third quarter, Fred Jackson broke out for a 22 yard
touchdown run. The Bills made the two point conversion, but it was called back
because of an illegal offensive formation. They then went for the kick and were
down 14-13.
The game breaker was when Jabari Greer picked off a Trent Green pass in the
middle and ran to the right sidelines where he rumbled to a 33-yard touchdown.
Four minutes later, Edwards found Lee Evans on a 39-yard TD bomb and the Bills
were in control of the game. A 45-yard Rian Lindell field goal was icing on the
cake and the Bills had a 31-14 victory. This win puts Buffalo at 4-0, the first
time since 1992 and keeps them ahead of the Jets and Patriots in the AFC East.
Tale of two halves
At halftime, many Bills fans must have been chalking this one up as a loss.
The score was close at 14-6, but how the team was performing on the field didn't
bode well for them to keep their perfect record intact.
Edwards had been sacked 4 times by a Rams defense that suddenly looked like
world beaters. They put such a ferocious pass rush on Edwards that even with his
quick release, he couldn't escape their wrath.
The Bills defense, meanwhile had a hard time containing running back Steven
Jackson, who gained 99 yards in the first half alone, including a 29-yard romp
in the second quarter.
"He had so many yards after contact," described Bills defensive tackle Kyle Williams. "We had to start wrapping the guy up instead of trying to knock him down or clip his legs. He's a big strong guy. We should have known better than that."
Bills linebacker Paul Posluszny, who had an outstanding game, talked about halftime adjustments.
"The coaches definitely got after us at halftime about tackling,"
he said.
The Bills came out a much different team in the second half and outscored the
Rams 25-0. It was a tale of two halves for the Bills.
Greer to the rescue
The Bills had the Rams backed up deep in their zone when Trent Green threw a
pass that Greer stepped into. This turned out to be the biggest play of the game
as Greer turned that into a 33-yard touchdown, putting the Bills in the lead for
the first time.
Greer helped turn around the game that had been all St. Louis in the first half.
Greer couldn’t even explain how he made that touchdown.
"I can't even say what happened," explained Greer. "I really can't. I was just trying to get to daylight. That was the biggest thing of all, because there were some big boys out there. I just didn't want to get hit."
