ADVICE
LODGING:
For comfort and
convinence
I recommend the Meadow Lane Inn (702)
725-3371 in the
town of Alamo, its a bit further from the
base but worth it. If you only plan on making
one trip to the area you might want to stay
at the Little A'le'Inn (702) 729-2515 for
nostalgias sake.
The rooms are actually mobile homes divided
by thin walls, and you must share a common
bathroom. On the plus side you are closer to
the base and you do have the advantage of the
Little A'Le'Inn library.
FOOD:
Once again, to be nostalgic
you HAVE to try the "Alien Burger" at the
Little A'Le'inn. Don't get your hopes up, it
won't be the best burger you've ever had, but
it won't be the worst either, its simply a
tradition. Ther rest of the food at the
A'Le'Inn is good, probebly better than you
expect. Other than that, there is a great
Tex-Mex place in Alamo called Del Pueb. Its
right down the street from the Meadow Lane
Inn. One last place to eat is the R-Place
Convinence Store also in Alamo. The food
there isn't the greatest but its already
packaged and ready to go if your anxious to
hit the road.
TIKABOO PEAK:
First off, READ
THIS! Second, READ THIS! Third,
GET THIS!
I
cannot stress this enough, BRING PLENTY OF
WATER! I call Tikaboo Peak a once in a life
time experience, because once you do it,
you'll never want to do it again. O.K., I
exaggerate a bit, but not much. Simply put,
make sure you are prepared.
MONEY:
There are no ATM machines
in Rachel! There are no ATM machines in
Alamo! So, where do I get money? Come
prepared! Bring all the money you will need
with you! If you absolutely need cash while
you are there you have two options, you can
either drive all the way back to Las Vegas
(plenty of ATM's there!) Or, from Alamo, you
can drive 80 miles north-east on the 93 to
Caliente, there is an ATM at The Knotty Pines
Bar and Casino.
SKY WATCHING:
It seems to me,
that "The Mailbox" is just about as good a
viewing sight as any, save one. There is a
spacious gravel parking area at miles post
32.3 that I prefer. One problem I have found
with "The Mailbox" is I have been "buzzed" by
the Cammo-dudes several times in one night.
Whether passing "The Mailbox" is part of
there
routine patrol, or they were trying to scare
me off, it got annoying very quickly. I found
a simple way to eliminate this problem was to
turn my video camera on them as they passed.
After that they kept there distance.
