After 13.8 miles you will come to a set of
signs on
either side of the road warning you that
there is a
restricted military instalation ahead and not
to go any
further. DO NOT CROSS THESE SIGNS FOR ANY
REASON!!! These
signs mark the the begining of the restricted
government
land and THE USE DEADLY FORCE IS AUTHORIZED
if you cross on
to military property. There have been no
cases reported of
anyone being shot for crossing the border but
they would be
well within there rights to open fire should
you decide to
do so. Crossing the border will most
definatly result in a
trip to the Lincoln County Jail usually
acompanied by a
$600 fine.
These signs also inform you that it is
illegal to
photograph, sketch, or make any visual
representation of
anything in the restricted area or flying
above it.
Although it appears to no longer be enforced,
technically
you are not even permitted to take pictures
of the signs
marking
the borders of the base. Taking photos used
to result in
the
confiscation of your film and equipment (the
tv show 20/20
once had $60,000 worth of equipment siezed
and they weren't
even pointing in the direction of the base.)
If you do
decide to snap a few pictures it might be a
good idea to
use a disposable camera that doesn't have
anything of value
on the roll, just in case.
Be warned, as you head down Groom Lake Road YOU ARE BEING WATCHED! There are motion and vibration sensors along side the road to alert security you are coming (so don't get any ideas about storming the base to see whats really there.) In addition when you do make it to the border you will most likely see some "Camo-Dudes" (see the security section) pearched atop a hill watching you through binoculars. They are there to come intercept you should you decide to cross the border. You will also find a strange looking device on top of a hill just on the other side of the border. This is a video camera with perhaps some other high-tech goodies attached.
