Three Common Misconceptions About Area 51

Time and time again, inaccurate assumptions about Area 51 find there way into the public's eye. Sometimes it is due to sloppy, poorly researched journalism. Other times its due to reoccuring themes in fictional works that the accepting public misconstrues as being true. Whatever the causes, and irregardless of their origin, I feel its time to set the record straight. So, without further ado..... here are the top three offenders.

1) Area 51 has moved to Utah, New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, Montana or any place else: OK Area 51 has not moved anywhere! Its still right there in its happy little home in Nevada. This one falls into the "sloppy journalism" catagory. I'm not going to get deep into the details (mainly because I'm tired of telling, and hearing the story) but here it is in a nut shell.

--A reporter for Popular Mechanics was doing an article on Area 51, he took a wrong turn on his way to the border and ended up at a locked gate that had nothing to do with the Groom Lake Facility. He assumed this was the Area 51 border and saw no guards there, then somehow (god only knows how) came to the profound conlusion that Area 51 had moved to the abandoned Green River Lauch Complex in Utah. This theory has been explored, and dismissed. There is absolutely no activity at the Green River Lauch Complex, in fact, it is possible to actually walk onto the base!--

After this monumental blunder suddenly everyone and their mother had a theory on where "the real Area 51" was. The truth is, the same number of workers as there always were fly into the Groom Lake Facility every day. There is still plenty of activity going on there, and it appears the facility may even be expanding.

I know, even as I am writing this, that there is an E-mail yet to be written, that will find its way into my mailbox. This E-mail will inform me that the Area 51 we all know and love at Groom Lake is just a front, and that I am an idiot to fall for the governments ploy. Somewhere, there is the "true" Area 51, buried under a mountian, or nestled inside a canyon, or on the moon, or someplace far out of reach.

I suppose there is a chance that this could be true, but I haven't seen any proof of it. I haven't even seen evidence compelling enough to motivate me to devote any serious amount of time to exploring the posibility.

2)The government denies the existance of Area 51: For a long time, decades in fact, this was true. But fairly recently (199-) the government did officially acknowledge that there was an "operating facility near Groom Dry Lake." The government will not release the offical name of the facility or comment on its purpose other than to say that there are top secret projects going on there that are necessary to the security of the country.

3)We do not know Area 51's Real Name, or Area 51 has no name: Offically, Area 51 is refered to as "Detachment 3, Air Force Flight Test Center" headquartered at Edwards AFB. Most other installations at the Nevada Test Site however, simply refer to it as "The Groom Lake Test Facility."

So there you have it, maybe that mysterious base hiding behind the Jumbled Hills in Nevada isn't so mysterious after all huh? Don't worry, theres plenty of rumors, half truths, and bald face lies to sort through.... The mystery of Area 51 is far from solved in my eyes.
