I hate being "the girl who"
I hate the looks in their eyes
when they meet me
and say, "Oh, YOU'RE Cyndi,"
as if they've devoured
every scrap of my
biography
that was written by
some stranger.

I can't stand
how they think the know
who I am
better than I do
Their gossip spreads like a disease
ravaging only me
They pin me down
as the slutt
the "easy" one
and I can't erase the scars.

but just because "they say so"
doesn't mean
it's who I am.
