Ruby Marsh

The Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge is located 65 miles south of Elko. Follow the signs off state route 229, go over Harrison pass and you will be there. The refuge is one of 500 refuges in the national wildlife refuge system. Open to fishing, hunting,wildlife viewing, boating, and other public use, Ruby lake is a great place to visit.

Ruby Lake is open to public use from 1 hour before sunrise to 2 hours after sunset. Camping is not allowed in the refuge but there is an excelent USFS campground next to the refuge. Information maps, and regulations can be obtained at the refuge headquarters on the main road which is well marked with informational signs. Also while you are there check out the Gallager State Fish Hatchery. It supplies trout for north east Nevada.

Fishing can be excellent at times, with huge Rainbow, Tiger and Brown trout [up to 15 lbs or more] caught on bait, luers and flies. When the water warms in mid may the largemouth bass start to become active and can be caught all summer on crank baits, spinner baits, plastics and bait.

Fishing season is open all year as follows: Jan 1 to June 14 limit= 3 trout and 5 black bass over 10 in. June 15, to Dec 31, 3 trout and 10 black bass over 10 in. The Collection Ditch is open to artifical luers only.

Boating regulations:Jan 1 to June 14 Closed to boats. parts of south marsh open to float tubes. June 15, to July 31, open to boats with electric motors or oar power in south marsh only. Aug 1, to Dec 31, Open to boats with motors of 10 hp or less. Boats may only be launched from posted launch areas.The main channels are well marked and the marshes are a lot of fun to fish explore by boat or canoe.
