Indeginous Percussion

Types of Indeginous Percussion Instruments

Musica Bambusa was started by Paula and Paul Adolphus after attending an International Bamboo Conference in 1995, a meeting of bamboo growers, scientists, craftspeople and a glorious array of bamboo musicians from around the world.

The perfect place to start the project was Indonesia where there is a plentiful supply of various species of bamboo, plus skilled craftspeople. So off they went for six months with a bag full of designs and heads full of dreams and based themselves in the mountain village of Ubud on the island of Bali.

It took two months to get started ? finding materials and adventurous skilled craftspeople was more difficult than they expected. But slowly, one, then another of the instruments started to emerge as their relationship with people grew. This catalogue is the result of those dreams and relationships.

Musica Bambusa's primary material for instrument making is bamboo. The bamboo ranges from giant bamboo to the beautiful black and tiger bamboo and the small bamboo for flutes and reeds.

Bamboo is a renewable resource and is grown and harvested without needing to cut down forests. It has been used since ancient times for instrument making, its resonance and hollow form making it the ideal resonator.

The woods Musica Bambusa has used for instruments are either plantation grown, such as mahogany for drums, or village-produced fruit tree woods like coconut, mango and jackfruit. Musica Bambusa ensures that the making of its instruments does not result in unsound environmental practices.

Some instruments are made by craftspeople in Australia and some by village craftspeople in other countries. Musica Bambusa works directly with the craftspeople in the design and manufacture of these instruments.

Musica Bambusa has an on-line catalogue available on the World Wide Web, where you can check on new instruments as they become available. Also a sound sample cassette is available on request.
