Percussion and Drums

Cooperman Fife & Drum Co.

Cooperman Fife & Drum Co. is a second-generation family business, committed to traditional craftsmanship and innovative design. Patrick H. Cooperman, a rudimental snare drummer himself, started peddling his handmade drumsticks at fife & drum corps musters throughout New England back in the 1950's. His interests in the history of early America were as far-ranging as his woodworking talents. Joined by his family in the business, Cooperman added not only handmade fifes and drums to his offerings, but also an extensive line of toys and games developed for museum gift shops as among the first educational children's products available for historical sites.

The Connecticut Fife and Drum Shop opened full-time in 1975, and, in 1987, Cooperman purchased the old Cowing's hoop mill in Vermont, preserving for the future the traditional method of steam-bending solid wood drum parts. Working closely with leading artists, our mill craftsmen have developed a full line of frame drums to complement the field drums. Today, Cooperman Fife & Drum Co. has 30 employees in its Connecticut and Vermont shops, carrying on Pat's commitment to hand-crafted traditional musical instruments and museum-quality children's items.

Cooperman hand drums start in the Vermont woods, where trees from their native hardwood groves are carefully selected for their special bending characteristics, then milled and dimensioned using methods passed down through generations of sawyers and drum builders. They blend the traditions of solid, bent-wood drum shell construction with innovations inspired by leading world drumming artists to create our finely crafted, rich sounding hand drums.
