The Carnival - An
extra attraction as part of the Tulsa County Fair every year. It was so much fun.

GRACE McDANIELS I saw her at the carnival in Tulsa when I was a kid. She was very ugly and was known as
the Horse-Faced Woman. However, I remember her as being very gentle and so nice to people. That's why I never forgot
her. |

THE GAFF BABY I was really happy to find this one online. It confirmed what Harold Haas told me. He was mother's boyfriend
and head of the Vice Squad. It was their job to inspect everything at the carny to make sure there was nothing
going on that shouldn't be. He told me that "baby" was a plastic doll. |
In my own defense, I must say that I was just a young NAIVE teenager. I'd seen conjoined animals pickled in jars. I'd seen pictures of the Siamese Twins. So, to me, this freak was very well plausible. |
There are a lot more stories about unfortunate people at http://phreeque.tripod.com/
But I don't remember any of those people. Just these 3.
However, here's a couple of other weirdo stories I can tell. :0)
THE DAY THE WHALE CAME TO TOWN
No kidding. They loaded up a dead whale on a bunch of flatbed railroad cars and toured the country with it! I don't remember any stinky smell. Wonder how they did that? I've looked and looked, but can find nothing online about this story. I guess if one were curious enough, they could research the library records for the Tulsa Daily World (now defunct) or for the Tulsa Tribune.
One of our favorite childhood jokes:
What would you do if the world burned down?
I'd take the Tribune.
THE DAY MUSSOLINI'S BODY CAME TO TOWN
Some people really believed it was him in that glass-topped coffin. I did. Sure looked like a dead body to me. In fact, I believed I'd seen the real thing until I grew up and learned better in history books. Somebody did a hell of a job on that mannequin. I am sure most of the adults knew the difference. Nevertheless, you should have seen the hatred that spewed out at that exhibit. Here's what historically happened:
"Finally, in April 1945, near Dongo, Lake Como, Mussolini was captured by Italian partisans and shot and killed on April 25, on the outskirts of Dongo. His body, hung upside down [by his heels], was subjected to “posthumous / humiliation” (Primary Pluto / Tertiary Neptune) in the Piazza Loreto, Milan." http://www.dominantstar.com/b_mus.htm
http://www.enterstageright.com/archive/articles/0105/0105mussolini.htm More: For an expression of the hatred and resentment that many Italians bore toward Mussolini, one need only look to the infamous event that took place in Piazzale Loreto in Milan on April 29, 1945. After Mussolini's executioners had dragged his dead body into the town square (as well as that of his mistress and sixteen other Fascists), there erupted what Moseley describes as an "orgy of violence that still shames those who took part:"
One woman produced a revolver and fired five shots into Mussolini's head to "avenge my five dead sons." Another woman tore off a strip of his shirt, set fire to it and threw it in his face. Under repeated blows, Mussolini's skull was cracked and one of his eyes fell out of its socket. One woman squatted down, raised her skirt and urinated on his face. Others covered his face in spit. People threw pieces of black bread at the bodies, and one man tried to put a dead mouse in Mussolini's mouth. "Make a speech now, make a speech," he chortled. One woman brought a whip to beat Mussolini. After all of that mutilation, I doubt there was much left of Mussolini's body for any kind of exhibit anywhere. I read somewhere, but can't find it, that they even put his head on a pole. I don't think they liked him very much. ;0)
