Cast On 42 stitches and rib in the round for several inches.
Make an increase round. K1, Knit in the front and back of the next
stitch, K1, knit in the front and back of the next stitch, around (63)
stitches. Do a step up round of plain knit and switch to a 16"
circular needle. Place your pattern at the side seam. I used a lattice
lace stitch over 13 stitches this time with an 8 round repeat.
I did 40 pattern repeats for leg warmer of about 6 feet in length
so you may want to adjust it to your size. Bind off loosely.
I like to run thread elastic through the first few rounds of ribbing. I
make the cuff long enough that it folds over. Say 6" or so.
Needles: l set size 2 dp, 1 set size 4 dp.
Yarn: I used a 3-ply homespun wool comparable to fingering yarn.
Gauge: 10 stitches, 13 rows = 2 inches
Size given is for men's medium or women's large. Using gauge increase or
decrease stitches and length to get the desired size.
Right mitten:
Using size 2 needles cast on 40 stitches evenly over 4 needles and work
k1, p1 ribbing fo 3 inches. Change to size 4 needles and continue in
stockinette stitch for 1 3/4", then slip the first 6 sts of the first
needle onto a holder for the thumb. Knit rest of round and cast on 6 sts
over the ones on the holder to finish opening for thumb. Continue st st
for 2 1/4". To mark place for finger flap, start at first needle and k 20
sts across palm of mitten, then p next 20 sts across back one time only.
K st st for 4 rounds and start fingers.
For the index finger continue over the last 6 sts of the fourth needle and
the first 6 sts of the first needle. Put remaining sts on holders (a piece
of scrap yarn works best for me). Cast on 2 sts land work over these 14
sts for 4 more rows, then k1 p1 ribbing for 2 rows and cast off.
For the middle finger pick up 5 sts from the back of the hand, pick up 2 sts
over the new sts of the index finger, pick up 5 sts from palm and cast on
2 sts. Work over these 14 sts for 5 more rows, then k1 p1 ribbing for 2
rows and cast off.
For the ring finger pick up 4 sts from back of hand, 2 sts over new sts of
middle finger, 4 sts from palm, cast on 2 sts. Work over these 12 sts for
4 more rows, k1 p1 ribbing for 2 rows and cast off.
For the little finger pick up remaining sts alnd 2 sts over the new sts of
the ring finger. K 4 more rows, 2 rows of k1 p1 ribbing, and cast off.
For the flap to cover the fingers, using size 4 needles cast on 20 sts over
2 needles. With the third needle knit into the bottom of the first purl st
on the back, being sure to keep the sts tight between the last cast-on st
and the first st picked up. Continue picking up the bottom loops of the purl
sts across back, then connect these to the first cast-on st and work k1 p1
ribbing across the 20 cast-on sts, increase 1 st in first attached st and
k across the rest of the back, increasing 1 st in the last attached st. Work
ribbing across the next 20 sts. There should now be 20 rib sts and 22 k sts.
Continue ribbing 20 palm sts and k 22 back sts for 4 more rows, then k in
all st until flap measures 2 1/5". Shape as follows.
Rnd 1: K2, K2 together
Rnd 2: K
Rnd 3: K1, K2 together
Rnd 4: K
Rnd 5: K2 together
Rnd 6: K
Rnd 7: K2 together
Cut yarn 6" from last st and pull through remaining sts and pull tight.
Finish off.
To work thumb pick up 6 sts off the holder, 2 sts on side, 6 new sts and 2sts
on the other side. Over these 16 sts work 2 1/4" straight. To shape point, k
2 together 4 times. Slip yarn through remaining sts and pull closed.
Reverse pattern for left hand.
