*Martha Dykes
(*=direct line ancestors of Rhomer & Kerry Johnson)
Not much is known about Martha Dykes. Some say she was never married and a man by the name of Cook was the father of Martin Dykes. (See Barnes Paper’s, Thomas Jefferson Barnes, (1883-1956, the Warren Co. Historian and genealogist. The Barnes papers are on microfilm at the Tennessee Archives in Nashville) Elaine Rowland wrote a book about the Dykes of Hawkins Co. She does not believe that our Dykes, Martha, Martin etal are related to her Dykes, William, Isham, etc…I do not know and will not until further research points the way. The book "Beersheba Springs says that Martin Dykes was a nephew of Isham Dykes. They did work together as surveyors on some of the documents that I have and they lived in close proximity to one another. I feel they are related in one way or another, but have no proof. That same book also says that Martin Dykes had four children and list Martin and Martha as his children but we now know that Sanders was the father of Martha & Martin Dykes.

Martin Dykes information.
I first learned that my Grandmother Temmie Katherine Dykes (Higgins) ancestors came from Grundy Co. Tennessee many years ago from my mother Minnie Lee Higgins (Johnson), (McCarthy), (Perkins). I found Martin Dykes on the 1850 Census of Grundy Co as follows.
*Martin Dykes 60 M Ten
*Mary " 50 F Ten
Martha " 13 F Ten
*Martin " 10 M Ten
At first I assumed that Martin and Mary were the parents of these two children, but later from erroneous information submitted to the LDS Ancestral File learned that a Jacob Dykes had a son named Martin Van Buren Dykes, born about the same time as our Martin Van Buren Dykes. This Jacob Dykes lived in Arkansas and for a long time I took him to be the father of the Tennesse Martin V. Dykes. But later I learned that their was two different Martin V. Dykes, one in Tennessee and the other from Arkansas (cousins). This Jacob is a son of Martin Dykes and Mary Jane Sanders. He named one of his sons Sanders also. Our Martin V. Dykes was in the 35th Tennessee Infantry and Jacob Dykes son Martin V. Dykes was in the 24th Arkansas Infantry.
