HISTORY OF MEMORIAL DAY
Memorial Day is observed the last Monday in
May. Formerly called Decoration Day, Honors
United States soldiers and sailors who have
died in wars.
The custom began soon after the Civil War.
In 1868 Gen. John A. Logan, commander in
chief of the Grand Army of the Republic,
named May 30 for decorating the graves of
Union soldiers. May 30 may have been chosen
because that was the date of discharge of the
last Union volunteers.
Some states celebrate on the tradition date.
The Confederate Memorial Day is observed in
some Southern states on one of four days,
April 26, April 28, May 10, or June 3.
The custom of honoring those that gave their
lives in service of our country has grown to
include honoring those that have "gone on
before us." From coast to coast the cemeteries
are a field of flowers and flags for a week
around the Holiday as a country remembers their dead.
The purpose of Memorial Day is fading and being replaced with the Holiday that
is the "Kick Off"
to summer and is celebrated camping, boating,
four wheeling, and backyard barbeques.
As most favorite camping and fishing spots in
the northern mountains are still under snow in
late May many head to the sun of the southern
states.
And for a lot of people Lake Mead is the place.
The lake is big and there is plenty of room for
all those in search of a change in scenery for
a few days.
In late May southern Nevada is wonderful
although the waters of Mead are not as warm
as in July it beats the snow.
