On-Line Comic Strips
Here you will find a number of on-line comics I enjoy.
MAAKIES
Tony Millionaire's lavishly illustrated strip set in a strange world somewhere between "Krazy Kat" and "Zap Comix". The characters include a simian named Gabby, an alcoholic bird named "Drinky Crow", and alligators who dress in 18th century naval uniforms and speak with thick French accents.
"The World Of Lily Wong"
Larry Feign, an ex-patriate US citizen living in London, England (having left the former British Crown Colony of Hong Kong), is the creator of three comic strips, The World of Lily Wong, Kowloon Kats, and The Royals. (All are archived on their respective websites).
Feign earned himself two Amnesty International Human Rights awards...and the ire of the goverment of the People's Republic of China. With the expiration of Britian's lease on Hong Kong, and it's subsequent transferrence to the Communist govermnent of the mainland, his strips were no longer published in China and Feign found himself unoffically "blacklisted".
"Lily Wong" ran from November of 1986, until it was discontinued on 1 July 1997 (the date of Hong Kong's transfer to the Mainland government). The strip has since been ressurected, and you can read new installments, as well as archives of the strips, at the website.
Feign and his family are now safely in London, England.
His exploits in creating a strip so critical of the Communist government of China (at his literal doorstep) earned him the mantle, "The Gary Trudeau of Asia", but that's damning him with faint praise. The man has to have cajones the size of church bells to do what he does!
"Kevin & Kell"
Bill Holbrook's Kevin & Kell is
an anthropomorphic comic strip with many computer references, as well as the first strip to be syndicated exclusively to on-line resources!
In case you're curious, "Herdthinners" is the company that one of the characters works for.
And, yes, four real, paper-based books, are for sale.
"Space Moose"
Adam Thrasher, a student at the University of Alberta, has a controvercial strip both on-line, and in print (Univ. of Alberta's Gateway and Univ. of Manitoba's Manitoban). His work, Space Moose has drawn considerable fire. Terms like "misanthropic", "anti-social", "mysogynistic", and "openly hostile" have been used by the strip's detractors to describe it. (Thrasher's parody of a Jack T. Chick tract must be seen to be [dis]believed.)
Despite being removed from the University of Alberta's web server, the strip has a strong & growing following in both Canada and the USA, as well as elsewhere on the Internet.
If you enjoy a morbid laugh every once in a while (like I do), enjoy taking a break from the world of political correctness, or want a chortle at a dirty joke, check it out! But don't say I didn't warn you!
And while you're at it, buy the Space Moose book Triumph of the Whim or Mr. Fisty will pay you a visit!
Gary Brookings' Pluggers
Originally drawn by Pulitzer Prize-winner Jeff MacNelly (who currently draws "Shoe"), this single-panel strip pays tribute to the everyman/woman who goes through life by "plugging along".
If you can't open or read this site, try going through the CTOONS site first (The site is apparently optimized for Netscape Nagavator).
There are other strips on the Internet that I enjoy.
It goes without saying that most of them are anthropomorphic in nature.
You can also check out the list at The Belfry.
(If not otherwise listed, the strips are updated irregularly.)
Peter Venables' 13 Seconds (New URL)
Temporarily down until he can find time to devote to the website and his strip!
Po Shan Cheah's Limpidity
Richard T. Matheson's Tales from the Mynarski Forest" (formerly "The Adventures of Skippy & Liska"
Alternative URL
Christian Cosas' CultuRe Trap
Garth Haslam's Chen-n-Solly
Joe Ekatis' Thaddeus
Eric W. Schwartz's Sabrina Online
Yes, the same Eric Schwartz who created Amy the Squirrel! This strip also appears in Amiga Format magazine.)
Tim Kreider's The Pain
John Bergstrom's Attack Cartoons
I don't agree with some of his political views, but his "Libertarian Man" cartoons had me (literally)
rolling on the floor with laughter!
Guy & Brad Gilchrist's ressurection of Ernie Bushmiller's Nancy.
(Updated daily)
Bill Griffith's Zippy the Pinhead
(Updated daily)
(If you enjoy Zippy the Pinhead, check out "Zippy Meets Meta-HTML"
Shannon Wheeler's Too Much Coffee Man
(Updated weekly)
Salon Magazine's website has several strips (all updated weekly) I find very entertaining.
The ones you can find there include:
Keith Knight's The K Chronicles
A collection of his strips, Dances With Sheep is for sale. (Buy it! He needs the money!)
(And while you're at it, check out his hip-hop band The Marginal Prophets).
Carol Lay's Story Minute
Tom Tomorrow's This Modern World
Ruben Bolling's Tom The Dancing Bug
Lynda Barry's Mothers Who Think
...and the serial "The Dark Hotel" by Bob Callahan, "Spain" Rodriguez, Hal Robins and Paul Mavrides
The Universal Press Syndicate has a number of it's strips on-line as well.
