Summerlin National Junior Basketball
Talk with other youth basketball coaches -- Click here
The philosophy of Summerlin National Junior Basketball can be derived from
the
objective of the NJB program:
To
inspire our youth; regardless of race, color, creed, or national origin. To
practice the ideals of health, citizenship and character. To implant the game
elements of safety, sanity, and intelligent supervision; and to keep the welfare
of the player first, foremost, and entirely free of adult lust for glory. To
emphasize teamwork for all participants.
Its not the coaches (no offense), parents, volunteers or board members that matter, it's the kids on and off the court that matter! The main and only reason that all the volunteers and parents work so hard in maintaining this league
COACHING: WHAT IS REQUIRED
To be a coach in NJB, you must:
become certified by attending a coaches clinic
have sufficient time to practice with the team
complete a coaches personnel form
participate in evaluations and draft a team
be able to teach the basic skills of the game
maintain your cool in game situations
be positive to all players and parents
play the game according to the rules
EVALUATIONS
EVALUATIONS OF ALL PLAYERS IS MANDATORY TO PLAY IN
SUMMERLIN NJB. Evaluations take place on a Saturday Morning
early in October. Times are assigned during registration. A limited
number of makeups may be scheduled for an early evening later that week under
special circumstances (such as illness). The evaluation process consists of the assignment of a rating by the coaches
of the players based on the following rating criteria:
2: A player that has an ability level above the others. Usually that player has been playing organized team basketball for a few years.
3: A good player that exhibits advanced skills but not at the "2" player level.
4: A player that has some knowledge of the game and exhibits average skills.
5: A new player that has usually not played on an organized team and does not know the game.
During the drills, each coach will evaluate each player separately. When all players have been evaluated, the coaches as a group will agree on the rating of each player, which will be entered into the master list to be used at the draft.
All players must be evaluated in order to be drafted.
Make up evaluations will take place just prior to the draft.
THE DRAFT
The draft takes place the Saturday after evaluations. The draft will be
conducted as follows:
Each coach will draw a playing card which will determine the
order that they will draft their team.
The coaches son/daughter is frozen and is the automatic 2nd round pick of that evaluation level.
All A players will be drafted 1st, followed by B, C & D players, in that order.
The intent of this draft method is to evenly distribute the players according to ability level amongst the teams. This will hopefully accomplish the goal of having teams with similar abilities to heighten the competition level and to avoid demoralizing players on weak teams that don't have any or very few wins.ALL-STARS
During the season, the coaches should note all-star level players from other teams. At the end of January, coaches will be asked to nominate 4 players from their team to be part of the balloting for the all-star teams. Each team and their coach will vote for players not on their team prior to the end of the season. The coach of each divisional all-star team will be determined by the board of directors... usually it is the coach of the team with the best record.
