Day 8
Saturday July 4, 2009
Happy Independence Day to my American Readers!

This morning we got up early and hit the pool for about an hour or so before coming up to the room and getting ready to start the day. I honestly don’t know how people sit at the pool all day long in this heat. After an hour I’ve pretty much had it.

Breakfast this morning was that nice slice of chocolate cake that I ordered at the Beach Café last night.

For some reason after we munched out on the cake we crashed. I’m guessing it was the sun that beat us up a little bit. We napped for about 90 minutes and woke up really refreshed!

After that we hit the diamond lounge for lunch. They offered the same stuff as usual but it did the trick and filled us up.

For something different, after lunch we took a drive into Arizona. We had no real destination in mind but we wanted to go up the mountains a bit and check out the views of Laughlin from up there. We ended up heading into Oatman up old Route 66. This was a winding road with wild burros and lots of burro poop on the roadside to prove it! Oatman is a tiny little town with lots of shops and they even had a gun shootout right in the middle of the street while we drove through. If you’re in a hurry, don’t go through here. We continued along route 66 all of the way to the tops of the mountains. These are the mountains that you see when you look out your window in Laughlin. WARNING: Route 66 is narrow and winding and has no guard rails on the side so don’t take this trip if you’re scared easily. After we got down the other side of the mountain we hit I-40 and took that into Kingman and then back down into Laughlin.

It was still early so we tried out something else we’ve never done and that was to go to the Avi Casino a little south of here. They actually have 2 casinos over there. One is on the Arizona side, and another on the Nevada side. We stopped in the Arizona side first and it was a joke. It looked like an old temporary Casino built in a warehouse that they quickly threw together. The main casino over in Nevada was a full service casino/resort. They had huge parties going on down by the river and this place was packed tighter than all of the other casinos in Laughlin. We walked through place just to see it and then got out of there and headed back to Laughlin.

For dinner tonight we wanted a diversion from the typical casino food so I ordered a pizza from a local pizzeria. We brought that back to the room and got ready to watch the fireworks over the river. The pizza was excellent (east coast style thin crust). This is the pizza place across from the Golden Nugget and it is family run so if you’re in the market for pizza and don’t want that Sbarro shit they have in the casinos, give this place a try. Just be warned it’s a bit pricey as an 18 inch pie with 3 toppings on half of it was $23.

The fireworks show was excellent and we had a primo view from the bed in our room. The show lasted for about 30 minutes. There were lots of boats on the river watching the show too and everyone cheered when it was over. After the show we wound down and went to bed.

Ah, was there something missing today? Hmm, yeah, we didn’t gamble at all today. Call it bankroll preservation and note, we didn’t lose today!!

Total win/loss for the day $0
Total comps for the day $138
