Day 15
Thursday December 31, 2009

Today is New Year’s Eve. Typically this is the most insane day of the year in town. I’ve been here during the day before but never for the actual celebration so today would be a first. We decided that any running around we do would be early in the day and then we were going to park it downtown to avoid the craziness known as New Year’s Even in Las Vegas.

We started off our morning by going to the buffet over at the Fremont. For some odd reason Dee likes this buffet a lot even though it’s bare bones at best. The food is decent and I’ve never seen it crowded early in the morning.

When we were finished with breakfast we walked down to the El Cortez. I had scored a slot ticket for $15 in a trade that I needed to cash in. Dee had never been here before so she got to take the walk to a part of Fremont Street she’d never seen and got to look over the famous El Co.

When we got back to Main Street Station we hit the triple play machines again. Dee lost $100 in about 10 minutes getting no quads and no dealt winners and decided to come upstairs to read. I played a bit more and only hit a few quads and no dealt winners. I was down $200 in no time. I walked around for a bit and played another machine and got quite a few quads but in the end lost more money. That seems to be the theme so far at Main Street Station.

Usually when I’m doing poorly at video poker tables are good to me so for the first time this trip I hit the craps table. Things started out ok here but then got choppy. Few people made their points but there were a number of rolls to make a few bucks off of between shooters and sevens. In the end I lost another $250 here and took a break up in the room with Dee.

For a late lunch and early dinner we went over to the Market Street Café at the California. Dee got a spaghetti dinner and I had the pork loin special. As always the food here was good and Dee really liked the pasta.

After dinner we played more triple play video poker. This session was much, much better than any other we’ve had so far. Dee hit aces and various other quads including dealt sixes and a straight flush. I hit aces and a bunch of other quads. I was up quite a bit but then the VP gods turned on me and I lost $100 for the session. I was ok with that as I played for over 4 hours on that $100.

Next up we played a variety of penny slots. I didn’t do well on them tonight. Dee had cashed in her scratch cards and got quite a bit of play on the pennies before losing and coming upstairs to rest before the midnight celebration. I played some ten play video poker and was doing well hitting aces and a few other quads but gave it all back when the machine got tough on me.

After that I tried a little luck at blackjack for the first time this trip. Things were a little choppy here but I hit one hand with a split and another with a double when the dealer busted. I walked away after 30 minutes with a small but thankful $100 win and came upstairs.

For our NYE celebration we had bought some food and Dee made us some snacks to eat in the room. We had a clear view of the strip to see the fireworks plus we had the TV on. It was neat to see the fireworks on the Stratosphere tower and then see the TV delay about 5 seconds later. This was my first time seeing this live so that was cool.

After the Las Vegas celebration was over we watched a replay of the New York celebration in Time Square and then went to bed at a little after 1am. Wow, what party animals we are!

Total win/loss for the day -$850
Total comps for the day $204
