1.
Chlamydia
and
Rickettsia
bacteria are the smallest living things; they are only a few hundred atoms in diameter.
2. The deepest mammal divers are the northern elephant seals (
Mirounga angustirostris
), which have reportedly dove to depths of 4/5 mile below the ocean surface.
3. The oldest inhabitants on Earth are the deep-sea snails (
Neopilina galatheae
). The species is reported not to have changed over the last 500 million years.
4. The fastest long-distance animal is the Proghorn American antelope, which averages 45 miles (72 kilometers) per hour. It is able to go longer distances because its lungs and heart are three times the size of a comparable animal. The cheetah is still the fastest land animal on Earth, traveling 92 feet (28 meters) per second.
5. The largest land mammal is the African Bush elephant (
Loxodonta africana
). The elephant averages 10 feet (3.1 meters) tall and weighs about 5.25 tons (4.8 tonnes).
6. The world's only cold-blooded adult mammal is the naked mole rat (which is not naked, a rat, or a mole). They live in colonies of about 70 animals in the desert fringes of Somalia, Ethiopia, and Kenya.
7. The baleen whales are the world's largest animals, and include the finback and blue whales. The largest blue whale known was found off the south Atlantic island of South Georgia and measured 110 feet 2 inches (33.6 meters) in length.
8. Sperm whales have the heaviest brain of any living animal [it ways more than 20 pounds (9 kilograms) which is about 4 times heavier than the average human brain]. They are also the world's largest carnivores.
