The Secret
To Her Success
When life gives her lemons,
Melody Thomas Scott makes lemon squares! Yes, daytime's
reigning queen of tea-taking and advice-giving is a baker
extraordinaire in real life. In fact, her lemon squares,
which she says are her specialty, are so tangy that not
even those who follow the recipe exactly can duplicate
their taste. "I don't know - I use the same
ingredients: flour, eggs, butter, powdered and regular
sugar, lemons. Fresh of course." Scott hesitates.
"It might be that I use lemons from our own backyard
tree. Yep, that must be it." With the holidays
approaching, you can bet that Scott has already begun
baking - she usually starts in October and, for the
months after that, the oven never really cools off.
Luckily, Scott's daughters, Elizabeth, Alex and Jennifer,
and niece, Christina, are nearby to lend their
baking-mitted hands. ("I taught them young,"
she says.) As for everyday meals, they're not big
production numbers. "I cook or barbecue chicken or
fish once in awhile, but who has time?" Scott says.
Well, if one must be stuck in the kitchen, it may as well
be because of dessert!
