Growing GarlicGarlic is one of the easiest herbs to grow, but it takes patience. Garlic planted in the fall is harvested in the summer, usually about nine months. Now would be a good time to plant for your summer harvest. Since I do not have a yard to garden anymore, everything I grow is in containers, and you can grow garlic in a container! You have to remember to get a pot large enough to allow the garlic heads to get big.
I use regular potting soil that has a time release fertilizer. Then take your head of garlic and split it up into individual cloves. Take the clove and press it down into the soil about two inches deep, then cover with soil and tamp down well. Water in well and place it in a sunny area. You may get some green shoots pop up after a few days, I think it may depend on the area you are in. Just remember to water when the soil is dry, and be patient. In the spring you will notice the green shoots pop up and they will continue to grow all through spring. Harvest when your long shoots turn brown and start to dry. You can then take all your heads of garlic and braid them with the dried ends and hang in a dark cool place. you will be able to use your garlic in a few weeks after you harvest.
