Your Virtual Home
Welcome Webmasters and Webmasters to be. We have a large topic to cover in a
few minutes.
My agenda includes: Resources, Contents, Angelfire and Marketing
Resources - Computer access, email, web site provider can all be
free when you utilize computer access at the New York Public Library, attain
free email and a free provider. First register for email. For simplicity
sake I'm using the Angelfire URL (on the handout I have for you, more
are listed.)
Contents - You are now ready to register for a web page. However, before
you sit down to create your web page it is a good idea, (especially if
you are using a computer with limited time) to decide what you want to
include. Look at other web pages - go to District 46 web site and look at
links of clubs in our district.
Include the following: Club Name; Contact person (name
and email); Meeting time and place; Information about Toastmasters; Link
to District 46; Directions to meeting; Link to Toastmasters International.
Return to Angelfire home page and read rules. There are 10 conditions
ie. no advertising for pay - no pornography.
Angelfire - After you agree to these conditions, you are ready to
register for a web page. Click on registration and follow directions.
Upon completion - you will be told to go to your email to obtain a
password - print this. You can now go to your homepage, using this
password. I suggest the first thing you do is to change your
password to something you will remember. Be sure when you chose a home
page name, it is what you want as you cannot change this. Let it
relate to your club name. All Angelfire URL's begin:
https://www.angelfire.com/*SA/nameyouchoose *SA=two letter State
Abbreviation
Creating Web Site - You are now ready to create your web page. There are
a dozen steps to follow.
1 Select EDIT page - This will do a good deal of "coding" for you.
2 Background - text color and visited link color.
3 Image - Angelfire offers dozens, unfortunately none relate to speakers
(I chose none.)
4 Page Header - make it related to your club name and include Toastmasters.
5 Lists - these are bulleted items - you can head the list with a title.
6 Link list - helpful or interesing sites you want to refer people to see
(two columns - title for viewers to see and the other to indicate the URL.
7 Text area - Here is text only, any features such as centering, bold, italics,
underline and even a line return must be coded by you. My handout I lists
a link for HTML codes - it is excellent and comprehensive. (Angelfire also
has a help link.)
8 Counter - allows you to see how many people visit your site. Angelfire does
the coding.
9 Order of image, list, link list, and text area.
10 View - check spelling, appearance, and links. 11 Save (on disk). 12 Submit.
Your Web Site is NOT limited to 1 page - you are allowed 5 megobytes,
this includes numerous pages, particularly if you do not use your own graphics.
Marketing - Add to your Signature in Email; Put on business cards;
Advertise in Toastmaster newsgroup and on-line Toastmaster club; List on
all club Public Relations.
