Attachment Parenting in the Bible
(Isaiah 66:11-13 NKJV) That you may feed and be satisfied With the consolation of her bosom, That you may drink deeply and be delighted With the abundance of her glory." For thus says the LORD: "Behold, I will extend peace to her like a river, And the glory of the Gentiles like a flowing stream. Then you shall feed; On her sides shall you be carried, And be dandled on her knees. As one whom his mother comforts, So I will comfort you; And you shall be comforted in Jerusalem."
The context of these verses gives it a spiritual meaning, but it does say a lot about the relationship between the baby and the mother.
Verse 11 That you may feed and be satisfied With the consolation of her bosom, That you may drink deeply and be delighted With the abundance of her glory." The baby is crying because she is hungry. And she will be comforted by breastfeeding. The mother's milk fully satisfies her. The baby desires pure milk, as we see in 1 Peter 2:2 "As newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby" Pure can mean "unmixed." The pure milk of the mother is the best to help the baby grow. It shouldn't be mixed with other things. In addition, there really is a special glow and glory to the mother who is breastfeeding and nurturing her child. |
Verse 12 For thus says the LORD: "Behold, I will extend peace to her like a river, And the glory of the Gentiles like a flowing stream. Then you shall feed; On her sides shall you be carried, And be dandled on her knees. This verse talks about the intimacy between the mother and the child. There is a special peace that the Lord has given the mother. She looks at her baby with love as he is nursed and caried along her side. It almost seems as if this mother is wearing her child. The baby is also gently touched and massaged. |
Verse 13 As one whom his mother comforts, So I will comfort you; And you shall be comforted in Jerusalem." The baby is comforted by the mother. "But we were gentle among you, just as a nursing mother cherishes her own children." (1 Thessalonians 2:7). The nursing mother cherishes her baby with tender love. (Psalms 22:9 NKJV) "But You are He who took Me out of the womb; You made Me trust while on My mother's breasts." The baby learns what it means to trust when the mother comforts the baby by breastfeeding, because of the love that is being shown to the baby. |
