Mr. Scruff is a funny funny little man. And his music is funny too. Like an early black and white cartoon where all the buildings bounce to a happy tune. That's Mr. Scruff's music. But Mr. Scruff also has another side. A sexy side for that hour when you're coming off of Ecstasy. Oh yes, Mr. scruff knows what you want.
The 27 year old Mr. Scruff (Andy Carthy, his nickname comes from his neatly trimmed beard) was born in Macclesfield, Cheshire, England but now lives in Manchester. He aquired the attention from DJ's everywhere with his 1995 Rob's Records release, "Sea Mammal". Now, with his debut album "Keep It Unreal" from the label synonymous with trip-Hop, Ninja Tune, the attention is coming from music lovers everywhere.
The album's first single, "Get A Move On" is a jazzy little number whose video is one of the funniest little shorts I've come across, starring these little "chaps" that Scruff credits his "mum" with creating. But then soon after is the sultry "Honeydew" which makes you wanna grab the person next to you and make sweet love. My absolute favortie song on the album, though, is the bossanova track, "Fish" If you don't like this song about the dangers of Trout with their "underwater weapons" then something's wrong with you.
Roots Maneuva makes an appearance that's a bit hard to get into at first, but pays off later. But overall, this has become my new favorite album.
