Possessed Hand
When Thomas W. Passmore, 32, saw the number 666 on his right hand he knew exactly what to do about it. Recalling the biblical phrase, "`If thy right hand offend thee, cut it off,'' the construction worker took a circular saw and severed the offending member. The shock and severe blood-loss required medical attention and Passmore was rushed to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital where surgeons began an attempt to re-attach his hand. Passmore would have nothing to do with it, however, and refused to allow them to sew it back, saying that he would go to hell if it was re-attached. The surgeons consulted a judge who said they had better honor Mr. Passmore's wishes, which they subsequently did.
He is now suing the hospital for $3.35 million dollars for the loss of his hand. His suit contends that the hospital should have told the judge he was incompetent.
