PATRICK TOGHER ARTISTS' MANAGEMENT Press Release - 16th July 1998 Opera Australia Principal and "Phantom of the Opera" Star, Patrick Togher, has just announced the formation of his new enterprise - Patrick Togher Artists' Management. Mr Togher, one of Australia's most experienced young singers, has decided to follow in the footsteps of his Manager, the late Raymond Myers AM, and take on the representation of a select group of Australian and international singers, conductors and musical theatre performers. Patrick Togher was born in Sydney and graduated in Law and Economics from The University of Sydney. Subsequently, he built up an impressive list of credits with Australia and New Zealand's leading performing companies. For The Australian Opera (now Opera Australia), Mr Togher established a repertoire of over 40 roles specialising in Wagner, Strauss and 20th Century Music. He has appeared frequently with all the major opera and theatre companies in Australasia and has been a regular guest with the ABC Orchestras. In 1994, Patrick Togher accepted an invitation to sing 'Ubaldo Piangi' in Andrew Lloyd Webber's "The Phantom of the Opera". After nearly 1000 performances in Sydney and Brisbane, Mr Togher was engaged to play the same part in London's West End; he recently returned to Australia with his young family and decided to change direction - from Performer to Manager. "I have always loved singing but love 'the business' even more" he said earlier today. "Ray Myers and many other colleagues have always encouraged my administrative ambitions - Artists' Management affords me the opportunity to combine a legal background with my intimate knowledge of the Music Industry." Mr Togher will announce his inaugural list of clients in August. Meanwhile, he is busy establishing his office in the inner-Sydney suburb of Newtown and attempting to create new areas of employment for classical musicians. "The core of my work will be centred around the traditional large opera companies and concert organisations" he said. "However, I am convinced that opportunities exist for the presentation of fine music in venues as diverse as Churches and Casinos! I want Australians to be able to take opera and classical music much more for granted - a rarefied atmosphere only serves to marginalise the audience."
