The Sgt. Anthony E. Lunko Page

This page is dedicated to my Grandfather, Sgt. Anthony E. Lunko, AUS. My Grandfather was drafted into the army in 1942. He attended armored school at Fort Knox, KY. He joined the 5th Armored Division at Camp Cook, CA (present day Vandenburg AFB) as a tank driver.

The 5AD was on desert manuvers at the time at Tony was selected to act as a crossing guard for tanks crossing train tracks. These crossing guards became the division's Military Police Platoon. The 5th later spent time on manuvers in Louisiana, and winter training at Camp Drum (present day Fort Drum)in Watertown, NY.

The division set sail for England in the fall of 1943. My Grandfather crossed The Atlantic onboard USAT Gen. Edmund B. Alexander. The division landed at Liverpool, England, and bivouaced near Swindon, England.

The 5th first set foot on the continent one month after D-Day as part of Gen. George S. Patton's 3rd Army "Ghost Troops"
